Today I thought I’d wright a small article about gold panning. Specifically gold panning in Alaska but the tips I point out can be used most anywhere theirs gold. This article is aimed mostly at people that have never panned before and are just looking to have some fun and not a anyone attempting to do any serious mining. The first thing you will need to know is how to go about gold panning and the #1 thing you need to know about gold panning is? Do not try to gold pan with a gold pan they are slow overly complicated hard to learn and master and not the prospecting tool for someone just starting out. Or anyone for that matter people just stubbornly hold on to the old style pans as thats what they have used since the old day’s. But theirs always been much room for improvement. I used the old style gold pans for years and got fairly good at using them but if you expect to learn how to use one competently in a weekend you are in for an awaking. I don’t no how many people I’ve watched gold panning at some of the recreational panning sites around here and complaining that they cant find any gold. I have tried to show people how to pan but they still cant get the hang of it and become quickly discouraged. The point is gold pans are crap don’t bother with them when I discovered the le trap gold pan it was a revelation. Finally an pan that worked easily and quickly. Ever since I have had this pan I can not stand using the old style pans and will avoid doing so at all costs the are just are to slow and not much fun. For me the le trap makes panning fun and easy. I don’t sell these things this is not a infomercial I’m just trying to save beginners a lot of frustration and disappointment and help people new to the game have some fun panning for gold instead of pulling their hair out. The le trap gold pan is infinitely better the the standard pie pan looking pans. I have included a picture of the le trap pan at the top of this article. Along with the sniffer bottle and a shovel that is all you need to find gold. Heres how you use the pan. The first part of the process is put your dirt in the pan about three quarters full you then scoop some water into the pan and stir the dirt around making a nice soupy muddy mess. After you’ve got it stirred up a bit hold the pan level and start shaking it back and forth try not to shake to hard and spill any dirt or water out of the pan. Continue shaking the pan for about 30 seconds. Gold is very heavy and will sink very quickly to the bottom of the pan. Once you have done the shaking its time to start throwing dirt out of the pan to get down to the concentrates. concentrates are the heaviest particles in the dirt and can be made up of many things the most important to you is the gold. Now to start getting rid of the useless dirt. what you do with the le trap pan is to fill it to the brim with water and tilt it froward thats it. Keep loading it with water shake it a little and dump it forward spilling out the top layers gradually until you get down to about three table spoons of consintrates left. Heres the only tricky part but its not very hard at all once you get the hang of it. You tilt the pan slightly forward and shake it from side to side this will put the gold all the way forward and under the bottom edge of the first ridge on the pan. Now you poor out all the water except for a very small amount just enough to cover the bottom of the pan. Pivot rock the pan forward and back this will create a small tidal wave that will run to the front of the pan bounce back and take off a top layer of the concentrates once you get the idea of what your doing it will be easy. After you’ve done this awhile if you got a good bit of dirt you will see some small flakes start to appear from the consintrates up at the head of the pan use the sniffer bottle to suck them out and their you have your gold. As to where to go Crow Creek mine just outside of Anchorage in Girdwood is probably your best bet, as their is very good gold their along with a lot of fellow miners to give you good advice on where to dig. Also check out Steve Herschbach wed site at Alaska Mining and Diving he has a great article on mining at crow creek a must read, its also a great place to get mining supply’s if your in Anchorage. If your more adventurous their are innumerable places to mine along the road rightaway all over Alaska just pull over and give it a try you never Know. The best tip on where to mine is to get a book or do some research theirs an old saying that go’s “gold is where you find it” witch basically means it can be anywhere witch is true but if you want to be successful you should go with the phrase “gold is where others have found it” if a lot of gold was found in an area before theirs likely plenty left for you to find so do some research and good luck. That’s it for me I’m outy here goodnight.
I see Rush is back in the news again and at the center of another controversy witch probably makes him giddy as a pig in poop. We all know how these over stuffed right wing baboons like to be the center of attention . It seems of late Rush has decided to dive fat head first into the stem sell research debate and espouse his views as only the #1 full of #2 staunch defender of all we hold sacred and highly profitable mighty whitey lord of talk radio can. That is to say with all the charm and tact of a wet fart during wedding vows. Hows this maybe Rush can get on the tapped phone to his buddy Georgy Jr. and have Micheal Fox declared an enemy combatant. Then they can have him discretely spirited away in the middle of the night to a secrete prison in some far east sh#t hole before he doe’s any more damage to are national security. Who Knows a little water torture administered complements the CIA is AOK boys might be just the thing to convince Micheal to stop faking it whilst going about stirring up all this unnecessary and frankly un American debate. I just hope poor Rush will for once get the fair and equitable treatment he deserves from those disrespectful little weenies in the liberal “wink wink JEW to the Arian brotherhood constituency” media. That’s my half cent for today, man though do I love to be watch’n that 3 1/2 ton right wing former ” ya uh hu” junky clown work it, dance Rushy dance.

I’ve had this garden up for about a month and everything seems to be going great since I adjusted the PH of the water. I have it down to between 6.0 and 6.2 on the meter I’ve read you can run it as low as 5.6 PH but I don’t think I will lower it much more maybe to 5.9 and that’s it just to play it safe. I got the acid I need to adjust the PH in my solution from a hardware store it was in the varnish section its called Acid Magic and it a safer replacement for muriatic acid witch is very dangerous to use have heard of people using it though. If you don’t have a hydro store around at least in my case a hydro store that’s open once in a while, you have to improvise. So I looked up on the Internet for what people were using instead of the adjusters the hydro stores sell and I got a suggestion that I should use this stuff and it seems to be working great. You get it at the hardware store and they use it to clean brick so just ask them were the stone cleaning products are and look for some stuff that says muriatic acid replacement. You have to be real careful and slow in adjusting your PH try to go only 2 or three tenths of a point at a time and if you go to acid you can bring the PH back up with common baking soda. It only use a little bit of this stuff at a time as it is very strong. What I do is mix it in a mixing cup just a couple drips with a cup of water and then check it with the PH meter and I like to read from .9 to 1.0 your going to need a PH meter to do this it would take to much time with the test strips. I got a PH meter off ebay for 18 bucks and it is working fine. You add it to your solution about a quarter cup at a time this is for large 20 to 60 gallon totes so if your growing in five gallon buckets your going to have to adjust accordingly. I stir very thoroughly check and check again the next day as it usually drifts back up for the first few times you do it. I have got mine down from a PH of 8.0 to 6.1. 8.0 is pretty crappy for tap water but livable, if yours is much higher you are going to be fighting a losing battle and you will probably have to figure a way to get yourself a cleaner supply of water. Adjusting the Ph down has made a tremendous difference in the health of my plants they started growing like banchee’s and if you expect to be successfully at hydroponics you are going to have to get your PH down into the low 6′s at least. I used to think pure water was good enough, pure water has a PH of 7.0 but Ive seem a considerable difference when you make your solution slightly acidic as in the low 6′s or high 5′s on the PH scale. So even if you have good tap water witch would be around 7.0 on the PH scale it pays to adjust it down a little and to monitor and keep the PH in the correct range. I purchased a EC meter witch stands for electrical conductivity I heard they were much more accurate then the ppm meters so I snagged one off ebay for twenty five bucks. I have the EC reading at between 500 and 600 and so far the broccoli and cilantro seem to like it. I might have to adjust this up some for the tomatoes but plants in bubblers don’t need a lot of ferts to grow well so keep the concentration low and work it up slowly to find out what your plants require to grow thier best. Bubblers as I said require about one third the strength of fertilizer that other hydro systems do so start off low around 500 for both ec and ppm meters. that’s it the vf 11 is working great and everything is doing excellent will keep you posted if I can think of any other tips to pass on have a good day.

I tried the VF 11 I got at Fred Myers and its is working great but its very expensive. Its a perfectly good hydro fertilizer if you dont have a hydro store nearby and theirs a Freddy’s. I think I’m going to get a gallon and see how exspensive it is compared to other hydro ferts I’ve used. As compared to the others it is really not that expensive I was just looking for a cheap hydro fertilizer and didn’t find a suitable one in my area. It might acually be cheaper than the general hydroponics stuff I used to use. Its working very well and that’s all I have to say so all in all I would highly recommend it. I have had the bubble cloner going for a week now and I’m starting to learn its limitations. I tried putting some very large tomato plant cuttings in it and they died. They just could not get enough water and dried out so I would recommend the system only for smaller clones with witch it works very well. If they start to droop excessively change over to rooting in another medium. My homemade lighting system is working great and my seedlings are growing like crazy cant Wait to have me a big plate of fresh broccoli and cheese along with some fried zucchini that’s down the road aways though. The zucchini seemed to root quit well in the regular bubblier and I didnt try it in the bubble cloner as I did my tomato cuttings just thought I’d pass that along. That’s enough for me today see ya later
Here’s a poem I painfully wrought while contemplating the myriad mystery’s of life in a Denny’s rest room ” the local at witch I acquire most of my poetic inspiration” I have titled it the go round, cleverly leaving out the merry part their by brutally truncating the phrase to serve my own selfish purposes witch will eventually culminate in complete global domination. But for now it will serve mainly as working class mantra of angst for the 9 to 5 bacon bringers. Actually it makes no sense whatsoever and that my friends is the dirty little secrete of all great poetry ” I’m just guessing at this as I’ve never sunk so low as to read any of that horribly malignant crapola “

Well had my cuttings in the cloner for three days now and I must say this thing is amazing. Back in the day when I used to clone in floral foam I would see roots in maybe two weeks. I saw roots growing on my cuttings in two days with this bubble cloner and at ten days I’m bett’n I’ll have full on root system. Whats even more amazing is the cuttings were by no means in great shape when I took them the tomato plant was half dead as a matter a fact. I did’nt think their was even a half and half chance of these suckers rooting. To say the least I’m very impressed. This ought to make things alot more productive and also alot easier. I allso got some bad news got my new PH meter in the mail today and tested my tap water it turned out to be 8.0 that is way crappy when I was growing in Anchorage the tap water was 6.5 not perfect but about as good as tap water gets the water here in Soldotna seeucks. Got some PH down but using this stuff is a hassle got a do what ya got a do though keep you posted on how things work out wish I had enough money for a reverse osmosis system just gona have ta make do though.
I thought I’d wright a little bit about cloning plants or taking cuttings whatever you like to call it. First a little bit on what plant clones are. They are Branch’s you take off a mature plant you are growing and then you attempt to make them grow roots in some type of water. Cloning plants in an indoor hydroponic garden helps you increase production of vegetables and other plants. You can pick the best of your tomato plants for instance and clone them. This allows you to grow your best plants forever if you want to. It also allows you to get a jump on the growth cycle. You can clone a 6 inch plant in ten days and with the right set up it will have a complete root system ready to drop into your bubbler. This skips the seedling stage and I have heard if you run the rotation and timing right you can be picking fresh tomato’s or whatever kind of vegetable you are growing ever 30 days. If you are gardening indoors your space is probably very limitated like mine and you have to be very efficient to get a decent amount of production. Cloning allows you do double your production a least and maybe triple it if you get real good at it. I’m know expert a this I have taken lots of clone but I have only just read about the current system I am trying. Actually I have tried the bubble cloner before but It didn’t work that well and I have just discover what I did wrong. Bubble cloners are just like bubblers only you do not submerge the clones in water. You let the stem end of the clones hang a certain distance above the water level and as the air bubbles burst they spray the stem end with water. This is actually aeroponics but you are doing it in a extra small bubbler. For my project I used one of those overly cute Rubbermaid mini totes witch are the perfect size. For this setup you should use a strong air pump at least one made for a 60 gallon aquarium as you need to have a lot of bubbles bursting to spray the clone stems. The reason my last attempted at bubbler cloning didn’t work well was the fact that I did not use an aquarium heater. this is absolutely necessary if you want your clones to root fast as the water should be around 85 degrees at all times. The only other things you will need to complete this project are some air hose one of those green aquarium air hose t’s, that is a fitting that go’s from one air line to two air lines, easy to find they usually come with the air valves in a packet for a couple of bucks. Some people buy what they call air curtains for making the bubbles but I just drill a buch of holes in regular air hose and make a loop out of it using the t’s and I weight it down on the bottom of the tub. I use fishing weights to do this because the clones are not in this system more than 10 days and I dont think that’s enough time to contaminate them with lead. After I get everything hooked up I put the lid on the tub and check to see if the bubbles are slashing on the bottom of the lid suffishantly. If that’s OK I drill some small holes about 3/8 inch and I make some type of system to hold the clones in the lid properly. What I made to hold them is not that fancy but it seem to be working I cut some one and a half inch plastic circles out of some lid material I saved from my bubbler construction project. I then drilled a small hole the middle just big enough to the stem to poke through and them I cut a line to the center of this stem hole. You need to cut them like this in order to take the circles off without damaging the roots that grow. this system do not give the clone very much support but they dont need it you are not trying to grow a full size plant hear you just want to get some roots growing so you can put them in your regular bubbler. After you get this set up you will have to make a hole in the corner of the lid to stick the aquarium heater into. The heater I got is to long to sit straight down into the water and I have to put it in at an angle witch is no problem and it seems to be working fine. I got it for eight bucks a Fred Myers and it has a thermostat controll seems like a good deal. Make sure the clones are not touching the water and do not use any fertilizer in these cloners they dont need it and you can do more harm than good. I got mine up and running in about two hours will keep you posted on how it works out I hear you start to see roots in these things in three days and you have complete root system in 10 we’ll see. that’s all for tonight Bye
I thought I mix things up by writing a few articles on one of my favorite hobby’s ,fishing and since I lucky enough to be living in Alaska I’ll be writing about fishing in Alaska and passing on some no BS tips that you wont read in any fishing in Alaska books. So off we go lets start with king salmon as its one of the most popular sport fishing species in Alaska. There’s no mystery or finickiness involved with catching these fish they readily take all kinds of lures and baits, lures such as pixies, vibrixs, spin&glows and all manner of large diving plugs and flat fish word very well. As for baits herring and salmon roe are very effective but their are fewer and fewer places every year where bait fishing is aloud but its not a big deal as kings bite lures very aggressively. As to where to fish most people will probably be starting out in Anchorage and you basically have three options stay in town and fish, fish creek “that’s the name of the creek” in not so beautiful downtown Anchorage. A definitely urban experience elbow to elbow combat fishing complete with whine’ose providing colorful commentary along with helpful critiquing of you fishing technique. Not my favorite type of fishing but if you only got a day or two as many business travelers might this is a quick and easy place to go and the fishing there thank to an successful stocking campaign is actually quiet good if you time it right. The fishing in ship creek is best in mid June to early July and should stick to smaller lures for this small stream. Pixies a very popular along all manner of fly’s and alot of people do very well fishing only corkys with small pieces of colorful yarn rapped around the hook, you can actually do very well just tying colored yarn on a bare hook ”very cheap and very effective lure in many places in Alaska the yarn sticks to the fish’s teeth and the have a hard time spitting it out give it a try” bright pink chartrues red and lime green are effective. Ship creek isn’t a good place for large plug type lures save these for the big rivers. Fishing on most salmon rivers in Alaska peeks and is best on the high and low tides and fish creek is no exception. High tide is usually better the low but if you want the best possible fishing show up and hour before high or low tide and weight for the fish to come in. Heavy duty test line and large sturdy pole and reel are a must on ship creek as it is very crowded and its best and polite to get your fish in as soon as possible. If your looking for a light test world record or feel its your obligation to give the fish a fighting chance this is not the place for you. A fish running down river a hundred yards and tangling up 10 or 12 of your fellow fishermen and woman is not going to make you very popular. A lot of people in recent years have switched over to level wind reels instead of the old open face spin reels that used to be so popular back in the day. Level winds are good reels and they are good reels for fishing from a bout but I think they are overrated and the reason for the current popularity has more to do with snobbery as they cost more then open face reels in general and they are slightly harder to use than the open face’s I think its just a matter of ” look at me big man fisherman with expensive reel that is slightly more difficult to use open face reels that are for wee girly men”. Don’t buy into this stupid fad and dont let any kid at the sporting goods store talk you into buying one. Spend your money on a good open face reel and you will never regret it. The reason I like open face reels is a technique for unsnaggin lures that I learned from and old Alaska native years ago. When your lure gets snagged on the bottom of the river as it should occasionally if your fishing right “you got to put on enough weight to get that lure down to the bottom if you wanna catch fish” you can use this trick to get it unsnagged about eighty percent of the time. Open the bail on your open face reel and hold the line with your finger as you would do before casting. apply tension to the line as much as you dare but not to much as to snap the line raise the bowed rod as high as you can above your head and let the line go. Most snags involve your lure getting wedged between two rocks and the quick release of tension you get with this technique much more often than not will shoot the lure out from between the rocks and ta da your unsnaged and back to fishing. Sometime you have to snap the line several times in this manner to get unsnagged or move around to get a different angle but it almost always works for me. Try this trick with a level wind reel and you will get such a rats nest that you would probably have to strip all the line and start over this and the fact that open faced reels are easier to use and good quality ones are just as reliable as level winds make me prefer the open face’s. If your a poser image is everything type though go ahead and get the level wind so’s you can look like a big shot but you will be losing a lot more lures to no advantage.
Thats all for tonight I’ll discuss the other two options for where to go to catch king salmon from Anchorage in my next posts good night
